Golden Girls' Estelle Getty Dies at Age 84

Sad but not surprising, Estelle Getty (Sophia) on Golden Girls passed away. Born Born Estelle Scher on July 25, 1923, she passed just a few days prior to her 85th birthday.

As the mother on Golden Girls with the sassy wise-cracking mouth, she was fun to watch. The show started in 1985 and ran for seven years. I would have been about 14 then.

I've seen some of her former Golden Girls cast members talking about her these last couple of years...saying she had dementia. It finally took her - Lewy Body Dementia (it mimics Parkinson's and Alzheimer's). Like I said, not surprising, but sad nonetheless.
