4 Year Old Attitude

This is my littlest one. She is starting to become "one of them" (like her older siblings) as opposed to our baby. Her vocabulary is going through a growth spurt right now. Some of the stuff that comes out of her mouth is funny.

She's started to walk like she's got junk in her trunk and she's proud of it! She had an older sibling tell her this morning that she walks funny. Her response was, "I walk like a girl."

That girl has a lot of wiggle! She's going to be trouble when she's a teenager. I can see it already.

Girls vs. Boys

My husband had a three-day weekend this weekend so he's home. I was thinking we'd light a candle, spend some quiet time together...

Oh wait, he's dead tired from adjusting to normal hours after 3rd shift, the Monsters vs. Aliens birthday party we had for my son today, playing volleyball with the kids, and three kids sleeping over making seven kids here right now). Guess we won't be getting any quiet time together tonight, lol.

From the way it sounds above my head right now, the kids are having a blast. I think I'm going to have to check on them several times because I have a feeling that there are going to be girls vs. boys pranks tonight between the kids. I told the kids no make up, no nail polish, and stay out of cabinets and drawers. I'm hoping I eliminated any messy plans they may have had.

Mud and Dog Poop Part 2

We found the bat. We went out looking the next morning. The little bugger is still alive. We put him in Tupperware (major EWWWWW factor) and called the vet and health department. Nobody seems that concerned but the canine culprit who was chewing on the bat gets an appointment for a rabies shot. She still had immunity from her last one but was due so she got it. The puppy is too young for a rabies vaccine so if she was bit and the bat had rabies...

They're shipping the bat to be tested. We should know by next Friday (except that's a government holiday so I'm hoping it'll be the Thursday before and not the following Monday). The two dogs who came in contact with the bat are being kept away from the kids until the test results come in. The vet didn't think it was necessary but I do. I don't see the point of taking the risk with the kids.

So that's the status of that. Fingers crossed that the results are negative.

More Early Christmas Shopping

If you know somebody who loves candles, there is a great candle, called the Wood Wick Candle, that lasts a long time, comes in many different fragrances, and sounds like a crackling fire. I'd never heard of these until today.

The wick is made from an organic wood. Who knew?

I am going to find one that has jasmine in it for my mother-in-law. She loves jasmine. I want the Wine Berry or the Mandarin Vanilla Fusion Candle for myself too. The Fusion candles are in hand-blown glass. It's an artistic piece, fragrance, plus the wood wick sounds like a crackling fire.

Spray Tan Instead of Tanning Beds

Some of my sisters hit the tanning beds frequently. No matter how many times they are warned about the dangers, they're still frequent visitors. Perhaps they don't know there is a safer alternative. Spray Tanning!

If you increase your melanoma risk eight-fold by being a frequent user (or triple the risk by using them occasionally) of the unhealthy tanning beds, why would you choose to use them and increase your risks?

Between the two choices, I'd choose a pure, organic choice over those that have been shown in research to be a risk to my health. There really doesn't seem to be anything else to consider. The safest way should be the answer every time.

Mud and Dog Poop - Oh Yeah!

We have several dogs. One is a little menace. If there is a tiny animal within reach, she will get it and kill it. A few weeks ago, it was three newborn bunnies. Tonight, it was a bat. Yes, a bat!

My son comes running in to tell me the dog has a bat so I go running outside, barefoot after a huge rain. When I see this dog flipping this bat around, I run outside and let loose with the loud swear word (it's the "thou shalt not" kind). I didn't realize my neighbors were outside in their pool until after I'd let loose with the swear word and started chasing the dog around. Great.

There I am yelling at the dog, running around their fenced in area and the dog: 1) won't come to me, 2) won't go in the house, and 3) won't stop torturing this poor bat. I don't think it's because I broke a commandment. The stupid dog just wouldn't leave this bat alone.

After ten minutes of chasing after this one dog, through mud and dog poop...did I mention the bare feet...I get the dog inside and go to check out the bat. It's pretty sad.

The bat is laying there making odd noises and looking pretty roughed up (like in not going to make it). My son goes to get the shovel for me so I can: 1) move it, 2) put it out of its misery, and 3) bury it.

By the time he gets back with the shovel, the little thing is still. I think it's dead until it starts chittering when I try to move it with the shovel. I back away and it wraps its wings around itself (protecting itself...hiding...whatever it was doing it made me cry). I can't put it out of its misery so I have my son go wake his dad up to take care of it.

He comes out bleary-eyed and takes the bat to the back of the property. We ended up leaving it in a pile of brush and old wood to let nature take its course (on the way there I apologized to the neighbors for the cussing as we walked by their pool where they were swimmming).

I'm not sure if we made the right choice. I feel really bad.

I am so NOT happy with the dog right now.

Edited to add: Checked the dog's rabies record just to make sure and she was due a few weeks ago for her rabies shot. I don't know if a few weeks makes a difference. Then my son told me his puppy stepped on the bat. I don't know if she was bit or not. She's not acting like it but bat bites are hard to find from what I can find online. She was too young to get her rabies shot when we got her a couple weeks ago and she's due for a rabies...about now. Wonderful.

So, I drag hubby back outside, in the dark, while it is raining, to look for the stupid bat. I'd rather them test the bat than quarantine (or test) our dogs. I'm thinking it was hurt and it's still in the same place or it died there. We're out there with a flashlight and shovel looking. The neighbors St. Bernard is growling at us and I am having visions of this mammoth dog coming over the fence to eat us. Nope, can't find the bat.

I don't know what this means but I'm stressing BIG time. We'll look again in the morning.

I Bit the Bullet Today...

I bought a swimsuit. Not that I'm in any shape to be wearing one but my four-year-old won't get into the pool unless somebody is holding her so a mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do. I hope people don't start yelling for eye bleach when they see me!

I should've kept up the exercising I started in April. Looking at myself in those three-way mirrors in the changing rooms sure gave me more views than I needed! It brought right to the forefront (in THREE WAY view) how much I really need to exercise.

I'm looking at the Kettlebell for exercise. They come in different weights and I'd personally rather use those than barbells. At this point, running around my yard would be better than what I do now.

Nestle has recalled their Toll House refrigerated cookie dough due to possible E. Coli. People in 28 states are said to have become ill.

Gary Papa, Action News Sports Director in Pennsylvania, died today. He announced five years ago that he had prostate cancer.

Tensions are increasing as the USS John McCain is to intercept a North Korean ship suspected of having nuclear materials onboard, violating a UN resolution. Intercepting it won't mean much though since you can't board their ship without the North Korea's permission.

A $1 billion "cash for clunkers" provision was just passed by the government. Starting in August, you can turn in an older gas guzzler and get up to $4,500 from the government towards the purchase of a more fuel-efficient car. Oops, I'm sorry, you get it from the tax payers. Bella Band Works Better For Pregnancy

During a first pregnancy, I think most of us get into maternity clothes earlier than we need to because we're just so excited to show the world that we're pregnant. By the second, third (and fourth in my case) pregnancy, I wasn't as excited to lose the use of my regular clothes so soon. I tried to keep them longer with an elastic band through the button hole and around the button but it didn't look nice, especially for work. Rigging your pants like that doesn't work well and when the rubber band breaks - oh boy! I snapped more rubber bands (and that hurts!) trying to keep my regular clothes longer! I needed a bella band!

A bella band can be worn over regular clothes that you leave unbuttoned so it holds them up. It extends your regular wardrobe at the beginning of pregnancy and after delivery so you can get back into your regular clothes sooner! If your maternity pants are a little big or fall low around the hips, which is the style, it will keep them up so you can keep wearing your low-rise jeans longer.

Web Site Design

I can create a basic web site. I have two of our own that I designed and I also made one for a local horse rescue that I maintain for them. It was fun to find out that I had a little bit of creativity in me, but not enough to make it a career. If I wanted a more involved, professional web site, I would definitely go to the professionals to do it. It is too important for businesses to have a good presence on the web and to make a good, lasting impression.

Vampire Hunters...as dads?

I have decided to start another blog for the bookworm nerd in me. I read a lot and thought a blog on book reviews would be fun.

I am reading Dark Celebration by Christine Feehan (which is only one in a long line for this particular Dark Hunter series). It is about vampire hunters and the extinction of their race with more male babies than female babies being born and the vampire hunters turning into vampires if they don't find their soul mates in time. It's been a good read for a bit of supernatural in my daily, mundane life. It's not like the strong, sexy vampire hunters are running to baby showers with baby gift baskets in their warrior arms. They're off saving their mates and future children and saving the world.

Stepfamilies are so much fun - - not!

I'm ticked off and I'm not even PMS'ing! That's really bad when I can be livid and not even have PMS to blame! Part of the reason is at Stepfamily Sanctuary. Oh the joys.

For once, I'd like to not have to deal with other people's bull as they jerk my family around. How a person could think that denying four little children their siblings is OK is beyond me. Must make a bitter person feel really good to make four little kids sad. Takes a cold-hearted person not to care I guess.

Halfway Thru 2009, Who Has Started Christmas Shopping?

Yes, that's right, I brought up the "C" for Christmas word and it's not quite summer yet. I know all you early shoppers are out there somewhere. Every year, I say I am going to get my shopping done early. This year, I really need to try. In this economy, we just can't afford the huge bill to hit at once at the end of the year. I need to spread it out throughout the year.
For my little singing diva, I found a Rock Star doll by Only Hearts Club. Being dressed in pink is a bonus because she's really girly. My eight-year-old daughter just performed in her school's talent show singing Love Story by Taylor Swift. If she is anything like her rock 'n roll dad, she'll be belting out rock songs like Lita Ford by the time she's a teenager. She'll like the Rock Star doll for Christmas.

Anorexia in Teenagers

My oldest is a pre-teen, six months away from being a teenager. She is all legs, thin and proportional. When she said she was fat, it floored me. What is it with kids' perceptions of themselves that they think they're fat when they're a size 0? If she wants to see fat, she should look at mom's thighs and butt! I've got the jiggle to prove it!

According to the American Psychiatric Association, the age with the most clusters for anorexia is age 14 and age 18. With three girls, it's something for me to keep in mind.

Most people are worried about being overweight. They're looking for the next best diet or the best diet pills available. They're looking for a quick fix or looking out for celebrity diets. Is there a quick fix? Is there something, besides living a healthy lifestyle, that helps a person lose weight faster? For those of us with medical problems with a symptom of weight gain, we all want to know that answer. However, are we TOO concerned with weight that we're passing it onto our kids too early?

David Letterman vs Sarah Palin re: joke

By now, most everybody has heard about the joke that Letterman did about one of Sarah Palin's daughters. To me, the joke sounded like he was referring to the 14 year old because she was the one there. Whichever daughter, it was in bad taste. Yeah, he's a comedian, yada yada yada but I think the children of politicians should be off limits. They are kids. They had no choice in the fact that their parent has put them in the public's eye.

Anyway, Letterman apologized.

The apology was accepted.

"The Alaska governor, in a statement issued Tuesday, said the apology was accepted "on behalf of all young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."

Time to move on.

Do you show your baby bod?

There seems to be a pregnancy explosion going on around me. Everywhere I look, whether it is on the television, in a magazine showing a pregnant celebrity, or even my sisters' pregnancy photos, there are baby bellies everywhere! We are in the age where showing your baby belly is proudly done.

When I was pregnant, I never showed my baby belly. I didn't even take pictures of a bare pregnant belly (which I regret now actually). I never had it in me to be like Demi Moore when she posed for the Vanity Fair cover in 1991.

If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely find more comfort in showing my pregnant self and what a woman's body is capable of creating. I wouldn't suffer through the heat of hot summers in large, boxy clothes. They come in so many different types and varieties, unlike when I was pregnant when you had so little to choose from. Now is definitely a great time to be pregnant!

Do you, or would you, show off your baby belly?

What a busy summer!

The kids have only been out of school for a little over a week and I'm already tired. Between swimming lessons, riding lessons, flute lessons, and open swim time, I'm exhausted! Trying to fit that around work, sleep, and housecleaning has been a real juggle. I'm not sure I can keep up with their schedule all summer long. We may have to cut back on the open swim time days.

I thought with summer break, things would calm down but they haven't. Boy was I wrong!

Diet Pill Reviews

I do not know anything about diet pills. I've never taken them, though I've considered it over the last few years. I haven't because I am concerned about the side effects and I don't trust pharmaceutical companies all that much. Plus I take thyroid medication so I have to be careful about what other drugs I put into my system that might react negatively. I'd like to find a good site to read about diet pill reviews, something with honest consumer input or I'd like to talk to others who have taken them. It doesn't seem like anybody wants to admit to it though.

Have you taken diet pills? Which ones? Did you have any negative reaction? Did they work?

Looking for Crib Bedding

We've remodeled our two youngest girls' bedroom (well, my husband, sister, and sister-in-law remodeled it...I held up the walls until the glue dried) and I am on the hunt for the right crib bedding for my youngest daughter's bed to match the pretty bedroom. Even though she is out of a crib and into a toddler bed, I still use crib bedding for her since her crib mattress just went from her crib to her toddler bed. It all still fits!

I'm not really picky or looking for a Tori Spelling bedroom set-up for our youngest but I'd like something pretty but affordable. I've been searching the Internet because local stores where I live (which is in the corn fields) just don't have any styles that I like. Plus, with several family members and friends pregnant, there are always baby showers coming up and crib bedding makes the perfect gift.

Live Event Video Streaming - a great way to watch a wedding!

My kids love to watch this show called iCarly. It's about a group of kids that do funny, inane stuff and amuse the kids watching them (like all the other shows on some of the cable stations now) and put on a regular show via the Internet. It's a "live" show (called "iCarly" of course) within the sitcom through live event video streaming. They have a videographer (one of Carly's friends) who films and streams it to the Internet. So, you're watching a "show" within the show.

It seems like it'd be a great way to broadcast via the web - advertise with your own channel or schedule an event for people out of town (like company meetings, weddings, etc.). Wouldn't you rather attend that wedding via the Internet (where you can get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the vows if you want to) rather than travel long distance for the cousins twice removed you haven't seen in years? My husband and I were just having this conversation the other day...how many people actually LIKE to go to weddings or how many people can't afford to travel for things like this in this economy?

No more bed bug infestations!

Bed bugs have made a comeback! Newspapers are reporting an increase in the number of bed bug cases in hotels and apartments. I know this from personal experience, unfortunately.

A couple years ago, my children were waking up with bites on their skin. There were no fleas in the house (I'm allergic to fleas so I'd know). We searched the mattresses for spiders and any other bugs but we couldn't see anything. When I looked up the bites online, they looked like bed bug bites! I washed and washed the bed linens but the little buggers hid well. I couldn't stop them from biting my kids at night!

Where had they come from? The only thing I could think of was that my husband had just spent several nights in a hotel on a business trip and perhaps had brought them home with him.

So I washed all the clothing again, covered the mattresses completely all the way around, vacuumed really well around the cracks in the floors, and the bed bug bites stopped. What a relief!

In the future, my husband is going to use a Bugzip. It is a bed bug encasement (made of heavy-duty clear vinyl) and will work great for future business trips so that any bed bugs that have made a home out of his hotel room won't hitch a ride home with him!

If you do get an infestation in your home, they will protect your clean clothing from the annoying little bugs from reinfecting your clothing while you treat. Otherwise, it's just a continuous cycle.

Do you like feet?

I was reading in our local paper today of a woman who wrote needing help with her boyfriend who was obsessed with her feet. The column is like a Dear Abby but "Abby" is a Pastor in this case so I was surprised at the topic! Who would write to a religious man about wanting a more intimate relationship (beyond her feet) with a man she wasn't married to knowing it would be published? Um...not me!

I guess there are worse relationship problems out there than being overly interested in feet. I wasn't sure if she was going to ask him to get therapy or slip on white ankle bracelets and enjoy this aspect of her boyfriend. I might just have to pretty up my feet, put on an ankle bracelet and heels and enjoy being made to feel pretty (because feet aren't the prettiest part of the human body so if somebody thinks they are...is that a bad thing?) unless other parts of our relationship suffered because of the heavy interest in these funny-looking things called feet.

Nose Piercing

I have been thinking about getting my nose pierced for the past few years. I'm not sure if I should since I'm not a young kid, or even a young woman, anymore. I'll be hitting middle-age soon! Yikes! I like the look of a little diamond stud.

I have questions about it, like:

  1. How badly does it hurt during and after?
  2. Is it a difficult spot to heal?
  3. Is it difficult to change the nose ring?
  4. Do you have to take it out when you get a cold (ewwww)?
  5. If I decide to take it out eventually, will it close back up and will it leave a noticeable scar?
  6. At 37, am I beyond (too old) to get one now?

Then, the question only I can answer: Will I regret it?

Adorable Baby Clothes!

I just found the CUTEST site for baby clothes! If you have tiny little ones to dress, you have to check out Sandbox Couture! They have this little dress here in baby sizes (and a version for an older sister as well). How sweet would this be for pictures of your girls together? I love dressing my girls up for photos so I can look back on them (they grow up too fast) and remember when.

The baby clothes for baby boys are too cute too! Look at this t-shirt and one piece:

Free Our Healthcare Now Petition

Free Our Healthcare Now Petition

"President Obama and Congress are pushing "reform" that will move Ameria closer to a government-run system like Canada or Britain. If they succeed, most Americans will no longer be able to keep the insurance they have. Instead, they will be forced into a government-run health insurance market, with most people enrolled in a government-run health plan.

I support the following as key elements of any health care reform plan:

Choice: I support the right to choose my own doctor and to choose a health insurance plan that best fits my family's needs and budget.

Access: I want to get the treatment I need, when I need it, without delay or denial and I want my health care to be patient-centered rather than government-centered.

Fairness: I want the same tax breaks employers get if I have to pay for may own health insurance; and I want government assistance redirected to those that truly need help.

Responsibility: I want more control to cover my own health care decisions and I want a system that encourages everyone to eliminate fraud, waste and abuse. I want insurance I can take withme if I have to change jobs.

Then it moves on to signing the petition with the following paragraph: "I, the undersigned citizen of the United States, petition the U.S. Congress to stop any increased role of the government in my health care decisions, I also petition the U.S. Congress to protect my right to choose my own doctors and hospitals without delay or denial, to obtain care that is patient-centered, and to have health insurance that is personal, portable and best suits my needs."

This petition is currently at Freeourhealthcarenow.com, however, it's not known the group that has started the petition against socialized health insurance reform."

Child Drowns in Pond

The niece of my brother's friend drowned the other day in a pond while swimming with friends at a friend's house. She was 12 years old. I don't even want to imagine what these parents are going through. I also can't imagine what these young kids will have to remember for the rest of their lives - seeing their friend pulled from the pond too late.

My kids are taking swimming lessons but none of them are good swimmers yet. My 12-year-old daughter has more confidence than she is ready for I think when she's in the deep end of the pool. Even though there is a lifeguard at the pool, I still watch and hover in the background. I'm not quite ready to trust the safety of my children to a stranger. When accidents like this child drowning happens, you realize how quickly and unexpectedly you can lose your child. I was supposed to start working out while my kids went to open swim and trust the lifeguard at the Y, but after this happened, I'm not sure I want to not be a second supervisor while they're swimming.

Hug your children!

Nursing Shortage

I have several siblings and friends who work in the medical field. I wish I'd had the stomach for it as it is a great field to be in. In today's economy, there will still be a need for doctors and nurses.

A former classmate of mine just posted pictures of a spine surgery she took part in on their Facebook page and I thought I was going to get ill. I seriously have no stomach for it but you have to respect the women who put on women's lab coats day after day and deal with life and death all the time.

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, we are in the middle of a nursing shortage and that is expected to get worse as baby boomers require more medical care in the future as they age. It's definitely worth looking into if you're looking for a career in a field that is going to be needed for a long time, as opposed to the up and down automotive industry that is struggling right now.

Hypothetical (if you don't have high school aged kids):

Avoiding Power Struggle Over Your Childrens Clothing

I was a busy mom this morning. I attacked two of my girls' room this morning. I hadn't organized anything so they still had all their winter clothes in the drawers and closets and their summer clothes were piled up on toy boxes. The toddler bed was completely buried underneath piles of clothes. I finally organized the childrens clothing, putting winter clothes away, organizing dresser drawers and closet shelves. Yeah for mom!

One tip to avoid those morning tantrums with your kids over what to wear:

  • Match up their outfits for them ahead of time (when you're putting their clothes away after laundry) and then let them pick from the matched sets. You don't need to worry about the kids running out the door looking like dad dressed them! (My husband doesn't match anything when he dresses the kids.) It gives the kids the power to choose their outfit for the day but still makes mom happy.

It's not like I have a nanny who can take care of that for me...or six of them if you are the Jolie-Pitt family! I had to come up with something to stop the morning tantrums and power struggles.

I'm Taking Guitar Lessons

...well, when my guitar is paid off and out of lay-away I will start guitar lessons.

I talked briefly about wanting to learn to play guitar a few weeks ago. I was thinking I'd learn on an acoustic just to fiddle around with it casually. I also said how I'd like to learn but didn't want my husband (whose been playing since he was a kid) to teach me because I wouldn't want to listen to him. (He tried to teach me how to play euchre and I just couldn't get it with him teaching me but my sister-in-law was able to teach me euchre. I just can't take direction from my husband! It's ingrained in me not to listen to him.)

Anyway, my husband just came home from taking his guitar in for repair to tell me he put a guitar in lay-away for me. I freaked out (over the money). He says what he always says when it comes to guitars - - it was a good deal and we have three months to pay for it. This is a picture of it (above). It's not an acoustic (he said learning to play on an electric would be easier). He says it plays nice (and it's the finish he knows I like...at this stage, all I can say is I like the way it looks since I know nothing about how to play).

Oh boy, now I really do have to learn how to play guitar since he is buying one for me. At 37 years old, I'm wondering if it's too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

Post 3: Somebody Stole My Bank Card Number

Well, finally we have a conclusion to somebody stealing my bank card number and shopping all over the United Kingdom with it! (For background, see the first and second post.)

All the fraud charges were reversed on my card. My bank, who seemed to enjoy charging me overdraft fees every single day this whole ordeal went on even though they knew my account was with the fraud division of their bank, finally reversed all their charges too. We got our money back.

We never were able to file a police report. Every time we went to our police department, they were closed. Locked up tight. Nobody working. Our tax dollars at work!! We don't know how my bank card number made it to the United Kingdom and there isn't a police report to go after the people who did this (which likely wouldn't result in any charges anyway...these hackers are good). It's over with.

Now that our money is back, it won't be there long. I'm not keeping that account.
