Have Great Kids

Since Christmas Eve, my nine-year-old daughter has been so sick.  She has still not been able to play with any of her Santa stuff yet (I am hoping she'll wake up today feeling much better).  I took her to the doctor yesterday morning and the diagnosis was virus (good news - better than appendicitis) and she started to improve through the day to where she actually smiled. I had to leave yesterday evening to take my oldest to her basketball game and my son did such a great job taking care of his little sister - making her dinner to nibble on, making sure she took sips of fluids every 15 minutes.  He is such a good boy.

More Inappropriateness from Stepson

Last week, my stepson sang and recorded a disturbing, obscene song and posted it all over his facebook for all the kids and family to see on his facebook.  The ex had no clue (because she doesn't monitor his online time).  At that point, I seriously considered blocking my younger kids from their older brother's facebook because of the inappropriate content and language he was using.  So, I let the ex know and she said she was grounding him from the computer for a week and had a talk to him about what is and isn't appropriate.  She didn't even take down the song for a whole week!!!  I didn't think that punishment was enough personally but I'd wait and see if it changed so I didn't have to block my kids from their half-brother.  My husband thinks his ex just told us that is what she did while she did nothing about it.

Well, nothing changed.  My stepson  left an inappropriate comment on his 11-year-old brother's facebook profile picture last night (the picture is of my son and his girlfriend at their band concert last week).  He wrote, "Get some ."  Get some?  He is 11 YEARS OLD!!

I deleted the comment (hoping she and her parents didn't see it), let the ex know via email this morning what was left and attached a print screen of what was left (it's not like she'd believe me without proof in front of her face), and that he was now blocked from my son's facebook.  I doubt much will come of it.

If it was one of my young daughter's, and somebody was leaving comments about "getting some" on pictures of them, I'd be upset.  I'm hoping I won't be fielding calls from parents today!

Needless to say, my stepson is now blocked from my son's facebook page.  It's sad that it has to come to that but my 15-year-old stepson doesn't know right from wrong because his mother never taught him and she sabotaged us everytime we gave him consequences for inappropriate behavior.  I also let my daughter know that he'd likely be blocked from hers as well.

Yup, wicked stepom - that's me.

Mom, your cheeks are squishy.

"Mom, your cheeks are squishy."

...says my 13-year old daughter.  Wasn't that nice of her?

It's a really good thing that human moms are genetically programmed to love and protect their young and that programming is very strong in me (anybody messes with my kids will deal with me).

So, yes, still struggling with weight loss.  I have struggled to lose more and struggled not to gain back what I lost.  It's not going too well.  I've thought about a diet pill that works but if my thyroid isn't working right, I don't know that there is anything else that can help until my thyroid hormones are right.

Slowly Cutting Apron Strings

My teenaged daughter has tiny bumps across her cheeks.  They don't look like regular pimples to me but it's been a long time since I was a teenager (I still get them...just not to the extent teens do).  I don't know if she needs natural acne treatment or a better facial cleanser that won't irritate.  Perhaps it is just a winter thing and now that spring is here and it's not so dry anymore in the house, the irritation will go away.

They didn't affect her fun at her school dance this past weekend.  She slow danced with a boy!  Her first slow dance.  I have pictures.  Even though she'd told me she slow-danced, it was still a bit of a shock to see my oldest child actually doing it.  Surprisingly, her dad handled it better than I did.

Daughter's First Heartbreak

On Friday before coming home from school, my daughter had her heart broken when a girl told her that my daughter's boyfriend was breaking up with her. What made it really bad was this girl, who the boy used to do his dirty work, is the same girl that has been nasty to my daughter since she started going out with this boy at the end of last school year. The fact that he allowed this girl to do that, and then he used this girl to do his dirty work, tells a lot about how respectful he is towards girls (or not in his case). She's better off (she'll see that eventually).

Today is the first day that she will see this boy since getting the news. I hope she does ok today. I'm worried about how her day will be today.

They ride the same bus as well but I drove her this morning because she had two bags and her cheerleading uniform to carry today for cheerleading pictures. Not only was she carrying too much to sit three to a seat on the bus, but I was hoping to minimize her having to deal with him today (they don't have any classes together) so she doesn't have too upsetting of a day. I don't think she'd want cheer pics that look like she's been crying.

Parents of Small Children: Ink Remover

How many of us parents have had our children get hold of an ink pen and write on themselves, on clothing, even on the walls? I know mine have. They've also gotten hold of make-up, markers and scissors too but that's another story.

There is a product called amodex. It's marketed as great for lab coats and scrubs for medical personnel but what parent couldn't use a bottle of this stuff? It has an unlimited shelf life so you can keep it on hand (for those trying time as a parent) without worry that it will go bad.

Here is a list of what it can be used for: ink stains, permanent marker, food stains like chocolate and coffee and more, blood stains, lipstick, makeup and more. I think I want more than one bottle of this to keep handy in the kitchen when kids make messes but also in the laundry room.

Proud Mommy Moment: Gifted Program

We received a letter in the mail from my children's school the other day. My eight year old daughter has been recommended for testing for the school's gifted program. We're very proud of her!

School Starting Soon: Good or Bad Thing?

The start of school is only a few weeks away. I love my kids more than anything else in this world but I'll give a sigh of relief around the second or third day of school (the first day of school is always a little teary/bittersweet) to have a few hours of quiet without the bickering between them.

I need to start getting them back into a routine. They've been staying up way too late this summer so I need to start inching them back towards their school night bedtime. It doesn't make that any easier when Disney puts all their new shows on that they want to watch (like Wizards vs. Vampires shows they have on now with Selena Gomez in Wizards of Waverly Place).

I am not going to invest heavily in back-to-school clothes until sometime in September since they usually get a heat wave through here in September while the kids sit in classrooms with no air conditioning. They'll be wearing shorts for awhile yet.

Is Imaginative Play Extinct in our Children?

According to an article on Primary School Suite 101, children who use their imagination benefit greatly in these ways:

  • Learning cooperation;
  • Being successful in school (helps children solve problems by thinking things through);
  • Practice real life skills (playing teacher, playing grocery store, assigning roles, puppets, etc.);
  • Encourages a richer vocabulary; and
  • Helps children grow into creative thinkers.

I have to agree that children should use their imagination more. I also think that children today are over-scheduled (and we struggle with this ourselves). It was always an issue with my stepkids because practically every day of the week was scheduled for them and they really didn't know how to entertain themselves...just to be able to play. To sit still was foreign. They were used to running from one place to the next with their mom so when they came to our house, we made sure they had ample down time.

Our kids would sign up for everything they could too if they could but we have to have a limit, there has to be boundaries as we, as parents, set those boundaries. My kids certainly don't get to.

I enjoy seeing my kids find fun in make believe, in using their toys to create imaginative worlds. You can find nice toys, like at Mighty World Toys, that children can just sit and play. They can create their own fun that doesn't involve electronics (like video games) or being over-scheduled in every single extra-curricular activity under the sun.

Parents, do you type your child's school reports?

I'm curious.

Hypothetical (if you don't have high school aged kids):

Your child is in high school and has reports due throughout the year. Do you type them for him or her, fixing all their punctuation, grammar, etc. or do you have them type them completely themselves (looking up grammar, punctuation, etc.)?

Avoiding Power Struggle Over Your Childrens Clothing

I was a busy mom this morning. I attacked two of my girls' room this morning. I hadn't organized anything so they still had all their winter clothes in the drawers and closets and their summer clothes were piled up on toy boxes. The toddler bed was completely buried underneath piles of clothes. I finally organized the childrens clothing, putting winter clothes away, organizing dresser drawers and closet shelves. Yeah for mom!

One tip to avoid those morning tantrums with your kids over what to wear:

  • Match up their outfits for them ahead of time (when you're putting their clothes away after laundry) and then let them pick from the matched sets. You don't need to worry about the kids running out the door looking like dad dressed them! (My husband doesn't match anything when he dresses the kids.) It gives the kids the power to choose their outfit for the day but still makes mom happy.

It's not like I have a nanny who can take care of that for me...or six of them if you are the Jolie-Pitt family! I had to come up with something to stop the morning tantrums and power struggles.

Bad Mommy

I totally forgot about my two oldest kids' environmental meeting this morning at the park to clean it up! How could I forget? My husband and I worked outside all morning to seed a large area of lawn where the dogs wore it down to mud, totally forgetting two of my kids had to be somewhere at 10:00 a.m. (and they forgot too). They're on spring break so it just slipped my mind that they had a school activity this morning.

I can't believe I forgot! It's even on my calendar. Bad mom!

Family Watchdog - Sex Offender Registry

Some sites people should be aware of, especially parents:

Family Watchdog
U. S. Dept. of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website
FBI Sex Offender Registry
Stop Sex Offenders

When my girls were invited to a sleepover at the grandparents of a school friend of theirs, I went online (sex offender registry and county property records) to check out the family and the area surrounding the family. I found a relative, who had property next door to the home where the party was, on the sex offender registry list. This family member could, in all likelihood, had been at the child's birthday party, with my children, had I allowed them to go.

I didn't. Thank god!

Will the registry find every pedophile? Absolutely not. For all that are caught, there are probably twice as many who aren't. However, it certainly helped us when we needed it.

The Pee Pee Dance

My youngest is 3-1/2 years old and not potty trained. She's stubborn. She is getting diaper rashes more often now. It's seriously time for her to give up the pull-ups (at least during the day).

We tried waiting. We tried sticker charts. We tried waiting again. We tried getting her a little potty for herself. We tried getting her a cushion seat for the toilet when the little potty wasn't used at all. We tried waiting again. We went through the peeing on my floor when we'd put her in just underwear - repeatedly. She even got my couch a few times.

Seriously, I am so OVER potty-training. She's the last child, the baby of the family. She wants to stay the baby for as long as possible it seems like.

I am desperate to encourage her to think this is a good thing so this is what I did today every time I took her into the bathroom:

Guess what? She hasn't had one accident yet. Go figure. I guess she just wanted to see mom make a fool of herself.

Goth Daughter

My daughter wore her little brother's "Rock On" t-shirt (had skulls on it) under a red and black vest hoodie to school and her FORMER best friend called her goth. This is the former best friend who I didn't much care for to be my daughter's best friend last year - bossy, always criticizing brat that she is.

Goth she is not.

There was a reason why I didn't like this girl last year and she keeps reminding me throughout this school year with her critical comments. I'm glad my daughter found a new best friend this year. Her new friend is sweet and friendly and is a true best friend.

Off To The Doctors

Well, after more than a week of back pain, I am hauling my butt to the doctors this afternoon. I don't know what I did to my back as I've never felt anything like this before.

I've had pain in the middle of my back, to the right of my spine, in an area about the size of a softball. Standing up was difficult...felt like my back was too weak to hold me up and it burned. I had to sit a certain way, with my back supported but not directly on "that spot" because the pressure was too much. There was so much pressure in that area (which has lessened in the last day thankfully). Sometimes it hurt so much I wanted to crawl out of my skin.

When I could finally get somebody to rub my back (boy I was NOT a happy mother or wife this past week and hubby is feeling the heat right now for it and I am threatening MOM STRIKE - I've already gone on WIFE STRIKE!), my oldest daughter rubbed it for me. Come to find out, I couldn't tolerate the rubbing. It hurt too much to put any pressure on that spot in my back. (See, if hubby had just TRIED, he'd have found quickly that he could have gotten out of it.) It was not a good week around here.

If I filled the dishwasher, I was in pain. If I did a load of laundry, I was in pain. Sweep the floor? Pain. Dress a toddler. Pain. Kids' baths. Pain. WTH was going on with me? The only thing that helped was not to do a dang thing, which is impossible around here with four kids...which goes back to my WIFE and MOM STRIKE comments above...grrr!!! So, I filled dishwashers, did laundry, attended teacher conferences, etc. and tried to be a lazy bones around whatever was a "necessity" that had to be done around here.

Women really are the stronger sex. Men get a cold and they go to bed for days. Women go thru pregnancy, childbirth and illnesses and still go on (though it'd be nice for a little dang help now and then - - MEN!).

A couple weeks ago I had unexplained pelvic pain whenever I moved and now I have back pain whenever I move. What the hell is going on with me? This can't be aging...not yet. I hope not anyway...unless the alternative is worse and then I'll just go with the getting old bit.

OK, I'm done ranting. I'll get my back fixed hopefully this afternoon and then consider some type of wifely/mommy revenge on my family for being SOOOOO helpful.

Mommy Tears

My littlest one started at her new preschool today. I drove her (tomorrow she will ride the bus) because I wanted to make sure she knew how to get to her classroom ok. I helped her put away her stuff, gave her a hug good-bye and left her there...in the hands of basically a stranger...to care for her all morning...without me. Yup, I almost cried leaving and on the way home though she had no clue mom was struggling after I left her there.

If I can't leave her for three hours, how am I going to send my kids off to college (and they ARE going to college or I will kick their butts)? Oh yeah, that will be DURING/AFTER the teen years so I will probably be itching to kick them off to college...I mean enroll them in college.

Aw hell, who am I kidding? I'll cry then too.

Internet & Children

We bought my father-in-law a new computer system with a faster processor and better hard drive. They are coming to visit soon and will be bringing their old system with them for my oldest daughter for school work.

She can't wait to have a computer again. She would like to have the Internet on it but I am against a child having Internet access in their bedrooms where they can't be monitored closely. I've heard there is a browser program that you can pay for monthly or annually that is totally parent controlled. However even at that, I still don't feel right about a child having Internet access in their bedrooms. Do you allow your child unmonitored Internet access?

My Last Two Horrid Weeks

The last couple of weeks have been quite horrible. I must have ticked somebody off in the universe or something.

It started with one of our horses dying. Rex was my daughter's horse, her best friend, and he died unexpectedly. We were so attached to that gentle giant and he left a hole, a lot of questions, and a lot of tears behind. That was two weeks ago.

Then, our hot water tank, which has been on its last leg for awhile now, finally died completely. It's a propane water tank with a power vent (stops the carbon monoxide from backing up into the house because of the way the idiot builders of this house vented it to begin with) which costs twice as much as a regular one so we are out $1200 for parts and labor on that (and still don't have it yet). The power vent makes it a special order and it's still in shipping somewhere. So, we've been boiling water for baths or on warm days, putting the kids in their bathing suits and under the hose (the Beverly Hillbillies ain't got nothin' on us!). We hope to see a new hot water tank in our house within this next week (PLEASE!).

My pre-schooler has been yakking on her bus ride to school still these past two weeks and I can't get the transportation manager to return my call. So, I emailed the principal of the school and plan to stop in there tomorrow if I can squeeze it in between everything else going on. I will change her schools if they won't do something about it!

Then, she my youngest gets sick (as in virus sick) a few days ago. I knew it would happen as her immune system adjusts to being around all of these kids but it still stinks.

Then, a few mornings ago about 4:00 a.m., my daughter wakes me up, says a pop woke her up and sparks are flying out of an electrical outlet by her bed. We'd already replaced one outlet and circuit when this happened before. This blew an outlet in my son's room next door too - black plate and black plug. There are no sparks when I get up there but it's warm. I unplug everything in the two rooms and check all the plugs and others throughout the house. They cool off so there isn't anything arcing in the wall that I can tell. Then I am up because I can't go to sleep by this point because I am worried. Hubby and I start going thru the circuits to see which one it is to see: 1) if it popped off like it should have and 2) which circuit it was. Turns out it didn't pop off the way it should have and it was the same darn circuit we'd already replaced with a new one. So, we get it turned off and I replace all the batteries in the smoke detectors to ease my mind and we leave the circuit off. We are leaving the whole circuit off until we can get an electrician in so we are sure no other electrical problems can occur. That leaves my kids rooms without any plugs whatsoever but better safe than sorry. I am thinking we need to update/replace the electrical box completely and have both those bedrooms (and the kitchen while we're at it) totally rewired with new wires. I'd rather just have the whole house rewired but we can't afford that. Heck, we can't afford to have those two rooms rewired yet which is why the circuit will stay off until we can.

Then yesterday, oh my gawd yesterday...

My husband is sick now from our youngest's germs. My son is starting to get sick then too. I am feeling it in my lungs already. That's not all...

THEN I am grilling burgers outside...my two oldest girls do something on their bike together that they were told just the other day NOT to do. That results in my seven year old's foot is all twisted in between the rear wheel and the steel bar that the wheel is attached to. My husband is gone so I have no help. I'm not sure if she's broke anything but she's in a lot of pain. I am trying to hold her up and the bike at the same time because the pressure on her foot/ankle/leg has her screaming bloody murder and any movement makes it worse. I need help because I can't get her foot out and hold her and the bike up and my two oldest kids have disappeared into the house (my oldest probably because she knows she is in a boatload of trouble at this point). I am yelling like an angry banshee for my oldest to get outside and help me (I can't imagine what the neighbors must think at this point between the bloody murder screaming of my seven year old and me). I'm swearing like a truck driver (I don't know how to take a bike apart, where is your dad, there are no neighbors outside, I don't have any help, etc...add a few swear words in there...I let loose). My daughter finally comes out so I send her for scissors to cut the shoe off. I get that off and still can't slide her foot through. I send her into the garage for tools to try to take the bike apart. The only thing I can think of is to try to take that wheel off to give her some room if I can so I take the nuts off holding the wheel on and am able to move the wheel enough to slide my daughter's leg up where there is now a gap and get her foot out. Phew! If that hadn't worked, I would've been calling the Fire Department to cut that bike off of her leg because I didn't know what else to do to free her. My oldest locks herself in her room to cry and my burgers are burned - shoe leather! Their grounding is going to be more strict than usual because I am tired of telling them not to do something (especially when it is for their own safety) and they go ahead and do it anyway so they've lost going to cheer camp at school this week, cheering at the football game, and extra chores to pay me back for the $$ I paid for cheer camp for them already, plus no texts or phone calls on my oldest's cell phone. There were tears over cheer camp but darnit, they have to learn when I say something, that I mean it and this has to stick. This was the only thing I knew to take away, that meant something to them, that would make an impression on them since taking away tv privileges, extra chores, and early bedtimes weren't making an impression.

So, we sit down to eat dinner anyway and my youngest gets a chip caught in her throat. She is making noise so I know her airway isn't totally blocked but it's hurting her. She vomits in her hands and in the sink and clears the chip. She's better, but I am about to lose it and run crying to my room myself.

Then (yes, there is more), my husband heats up water on our flat, glass top stove for his bath (remember the hot water tank is out). He turns the stove off but it takes awhile for those burners to cool and they don't look hot anymore. My nine year old son puts his fingers on the burner. He's in agony. I run cool water which isn't cool enough so I get an ice pack out and try to cool his fingers a bit. I then put Lidocaine on it to try to numb the pain because he's still rolling all over the place and crying, hanging onto his hand and banging it into the couch. Between his fever and sore throat from the virus and now his hand, he's pretty miserable but he finally gets some sleep when his fingers numb up a bit.

I am surprised I still have my sanity after these last two weeks. A bottle of Cuervo is seriously needed about right now.
