Bon Bons and Soap Operas

It's the second week of school and I am waiting for some down time.  I'd like to see the person who thinks stay-at-home moms have it so easy - eating bon bons and watching soap operas all day long.  They'd need a smack upside the head.  Let me tell you, I have not ingested one bon bon or watched one soap opera yet.  I have been running constantly since school started last week! I thought today I'd have a little time to myself but my "to do" list is already growing for the day.  *sigh*  Maybe tomorrow.

I dropped my oldest off at the school today for freshman orientation.  *falls over*

Here's to hoping the next four years will be easy!  :D  I can dream, right?

Middle School Field Trips Far Away

My daughter's 7th grade trip this year was to Chicago - a few states away from us.  We couldn't afford to send her and didn't think it was a good idea that she went anyway (due to problems we've had with one of her teachers) so she missed it.  We have been looking at pictures her friends took while in Chicago.  They should get hired for brochure printing for tourists with these pictures. It looks like it was a fun trip, not necessarily educational but fun.  I'm not sorry we didn't spend $400 to send her on this trip at all.

She's asking to go on the 8th grade trip already for next year which is to Washington D.C.  Oh lordy help me.  At least that would be educational but spend money to send her to Obama's house?  Hmm...lol.

We never did field trips like this in junior high.  Boy how things change.

Daughter Has Art on Display with County Arts Council

My oldest daughter had art class last marking period.  One of her art pieces was selected for the county arts council show.  Great for her!

Bad news?  We had no idea where/what until a note came home the day of telling us that her art was appearing that evening so we could pick up her certificate from there, but they didn't give any address, time or anything!  We had no friggen idea where it was and the school was closed so I couldn't call.  I was mad.  I googled the art council and nothing!  We missed it.

We got her certificate (her art teacher brought it back) but it sure would've been nice to get pictures of her art on display!

Did I mention yet that I can't stand my kids' school?

Feel Like Bad Mommy

I'm grounding my 13 year old and her grounding includes no cheering at tomorrow's basketball game. She got a bad grade on a report and I told her before she started cheerleading that if she was going to do cheerleading, she had to keep her grades up or I was pulling her. I shouldn't feel bad for giving consequences but I do!  Maybe I'd feel a little bit better if hubby totally agreed with me but he thought the zero on the report was consequence enough.  Um, no!  What would that show her if I allowed her to go back on our agreement?  What would that show her if we didn't make a big deal out of a zero on a report?  She did the crime, now she does the time and if that means her last away game of the season, so be it.

We give her the tools to do her homework - a desk, a laptop with enough laptop memory to do whatever she needs, help if she has questions.  She didn't ask me for help on the report and she said she was too embarassed to ask her teacher for help because she'd look stupid in front of her classmates.  Well, here's the consequences.

7th Grade Health Class Topics

My 12 year old has a Health class in 7th grade. I've never had "Health" before so I asked the teacher for the syllabus. Here is what is included:

  • Nutrition
  • Body Systems
  • Physical Fitness
  • Suicide
  • First Aid
  • Sexuality
  • Drugs & Alcohol

I'm curious to know what exactly they will be teaching for Sexuality. I would imagine that during these classes, a lot of kids will be wearing red faces.

My daughter is already certified through the Red Cross for CPR/First Aid so that part of the class should be just a refresher for her.

Parents, do you type your child's school reports?

I'm curious.

Hypothetical (if you don't have high school aged kids):

Your child is in high school and has reports due throughout the year. Do you type them for him or her, fixing all their punctuation, grammar, etc. or do you have them type them completely themselves (looking up grammar, punctuation, etc.)?

Career Paths

It's been a few years since I've been to college...six or seven years I guess since I was last in college. I started going to college nights right after high school while I worked full-time. At that time, it was for office administration. Once I had a great career going, I took some drafting courses thinking I might change career paths into computer aided design (CAD) or program management where I worked as my job was already including duties outside of office administration and I was good at them. Then I had kids and well, you know how that can go sometimes. I did go back to school about 6-7 years ago for Paralegal. I love the law and had wanted to be an attorney since I had married. However, who has money for law school when you get married and get two automatic children (two stepkids) and court fights out the wazoo with their mother? Paralegal was the affordable step down for lawyer. The ex got lucky on that one.

Now I am studying again and it feels odd. It is harder to concentrate, probably because it is a home study course instead of an actual classroom setting. This course had classroom study but with our four kids, that just wasn't going to happen. In a classroom setting, you have the instructor to bounce your questions and ideas off of. I like the home study hours (they are what I want them to be) but you do lose out a bit with not having an instructor on hand daily or weekly to clarify and keep you on track. I am hoping to take my state test in a few weeks (after my studies are done). The test is very difficult. I guess most people don't pass the first and second times (or third). Tough stuff! I want to pass it the first time.

1st Day of School

The dreaded first day of school has gone when the alarm clocks sound shrill that early in the morning, kids are excited and complaining of stomach aches and moms are putting their babies on the bus for the first time...another snip of the apron strings, another milestone.

My youngest (preschooler) had motion sickness on the bus and christened the bus floor for them with her cheerios. Her first bus ride. She was excited to go to school and then became a little tentative/nervous when she stepped onto the bus. The bus is huge and she is so tiny. She bravely got buckled into her seat for the bus ride to school. I smiled, told her to have fun, and choked on tears as the bus pulled away. Other than yakking, she enjoyed her first day of preschool.

My other three kids made it through the school day happily it seems coming home with a lot to talk about and homework (on the first day!). My middle daughter rarely stops talking anyway s now she had even more to talk about...talking so fast she was stuttering like crazy. My son's only complaint was that his locker was too far away from his classroom and they can't fill their water bottles until the end of the day. My oldest started junior high. They enforce the dress code in junior high (can't have distractions now, which she is complaining about). Not that she dresses inappropriately but she has long arms and long legs so when you can't wear shorts or skirts above your fingertips when your arms are at your side, she has a disadvantage because skirts/shorts that would be fine on other girls look too short on her with the fingertip rule. I blamed it on boys. I told her that boys in junior high get distracted easily now so the girls have to make sure they aren't dressed to distract.

It all went well for all of them. They seem to like their teachers so far and it has distracted my oldest daughter from the loss of her horse a bit so she's not holed up in her room anymore. She went outside to play for the first time since last week yesterday after school.

One Week Left

A week from today, all of my kids will be in school...even my toddler. Since she qualified for preschool for speech therapy, she will be going in the mornings. She will be getting on a big school bus and coming home on a school bus. She is insisting on riding the bus (rather than me drive her) and that I can't help her get on or off. I told her the first few days, I might have to help her on the bus to get her settled (her backpack looks HUGE on her, lol). She doesn't know that the first day, mommy will be following in her car to make sure when she gets off the bus at school, she is ok. I will probably be a sobbing mess but she'll probably be fine.

That is going to be on sucky morning. I usually get teary when my kids go back to school anyway (not sure why since they're usually bugging me by this time of the summer, lol) but since MY BABY is leaving too...it's going to be a hard morning. She's our last so it will be especially hard to see her take another step towards no longer being our baby.

Mommy Vacation!!

Mommy vacation! Oops, what I meant to say was that school resumes in less than a month and the kids will be back in school. If our youngest qualifies for speech therapy through the schools, she will be going to pre-school for half a day as well. *imagine me leaning back across the arm of our love seat with my hand across my brow in my best southern accent* Whatever will I do with myself?

LOL.

Yeah, school will be back in session soon. OK, getting up that early doesn't thrill me but a few hours to myself does. I don't think that makes me a bad mom. I think it means I am still sane enough to want some time for myself. Perhaps take a bubble bath. Perhaps spend more time at the stable. Perhaps spend more time growing my home business. What I WON'T be doing is sitting around on my duff watching television and eating bon bons so y'all can get that idea out of your head right now. The possibilities are endless.

Non-Custodial Parents Rights at School

If you are a non-custodial parent looking for information on how to be involved in and have access to your child's school records, report cards, etc., read School & the Non-Custodial Parent. There are tips and advice as well as information to the law that entitles you to access and involvement.

So, with the upcoming school year coming up, get prepared now. Get letters drafted to your child's teacher and the principal indicating your legal custody status and let them know of your desire for involvement. Request copies of each report card and progress report be mailed to you directly. Request copies of the school and teacher's newsletters as well as appointments at each parent-teacher conference. If possible, see if you can request your own picture order form if getting pictures of your child is a problem. Sign up as a helper for a holiday party or field trip (teachers are always looking for those sign-ups at the start of the year).

There are things you can do to stay involved in your child's education if the other parent isn't keeping you updated. Take matters into your own hands and approach the school yourself rather than waiting, and hoping, your ex will keep you informed if past history shows different. The law is on your side to do this.

Second Language in Children

They say that children can learn a second language easier than if they were to wait until they were....well, not children. The school where my kids go start to teach Spanish starting at 1st grade. It is a rotation class (like gym, computer, art, music). I think it's good for them. If they can get a good start on learning another language instead of waiting until high school or beyond, I don't see the problem with it. I'm glad their school does this. Their old school didn't do this. I wonder if it is going to become more common in elementary schools. Is it offered in your children's schools?

Bleeding Money at the End of the School Year

We are getting hit left and right with the school right now until the end of the school year. We have fees for three children's spring portraits (which did turn out beautiful I must say...we make cute kids), 1-2 field trips for each child (times three kids), the daddy/daughter dance tickets and dresses for two children, t-shirts for Field Day for two children, Square Art orders for one child...what's next? Oh yeah, teacher appreciate week is next week and end of the year gifts for the teachers, bus drivers and anybody else who comes in regular contact with my kids at the school. I'm sure I am forgetting something on here. As long as I don't forget it for the kids, it's all good. That'd be bad if I forgot to pay for something for one of the kids and they were left out. Last month, I spent $36 on cookie dough. Cookie dough!
