Mud and Dog Poop Part III

The good news is that we received good news on the rabies test on the bat that was sent to the health department. The test was negative.

The bad news is that they had to do TWO tests - the bat had a baby bat under its wing. It was a mommy. That's why she was keeping her wings curled up around herself. She was trying to protect her baby. That made me cry.

That made five animals that the dog had killed in the past few weeks, four of them new babies.

The dogs got out of our home-induced quarantine.

Mud and Dog Poop Part 2

We found the bat. We went out looking the next morning. The little bugger is still alive. We put him in Tupperware (major EWWWWW factor) and called the vet and health department. Nobody seems that concerned but the canine culprit who was chewing on the bat gets an appointment for a rabies shot. She still had immunity from her last one but was due so she got it. The puppy is too young for a rabies vaccine so if she was bit and the bat had rabies...

They're shipping the bat to be tested. We should know by next Friday (except that's a government holiday so I'm hoping it'll be the Thursday before and not the following Monday). The two dogs who came in contact with the bat are being kept away from the kids until the test results come in. The vet didn't think it was necessary but I do. I don't see the point of taking the risk with the kids.

So that's the status of that. Fingers crossed that the results are negative.

Flea Season is Here!!

Summer is on its way. Have you protected your pets from fleas yet? We have, thankfully, not had a problem with them the last several years (*knock on wood*) and I really hope there isn't a flea problem this year too. My son and I are allergic to their bites so we break out all over and are just miserable. My stepson is also allergic so when we did get them in the house, you can bet we heard from his mother about it (like we put the fleas in our house on purpose...or like she could even prove they came from OUR house). Since they are so hard to get rid of once they get into the carpets and furnishings, I want to avoid them completely. When we use Frontline for our dogs, it keeps them away. It seems to work so why mess with a good thing?

Bling for my Horse

I went on a little shopping spree over the weekend buying pet supplies for my horse, JeeNee. She needed a new leather headstall. I was undecided whether to go for bling or function on the headstall but I think I made the right choice. She is also getting new reins and a new bit. Once I decide on her colors and get the saddle pad, she'll be one stylin' spotted draft.

What is the best colors for a black and white mare? Pink? Purple? Red? Orange? I am sure some of you are wondering what the heck it matters but if you know me well, you know I have this thing about matching. Obviously, it has extended beyond myself and my kids to my horse too.

How to stop dogs from destroying lawn?

Last summer, we paid to have aluminum fence installation completed for our three dogs' safety. We fenced off an area of our backyard for them so they could run and play safely. They love it but they've dug holes and ran most of it down to mud.

I am going to plant grass seed next month, but is there a way to keep it grass? I don't want them destroying the lawn again. I'm not sure how to maintain the lawn and prevent the dogs from destroying it again. How do you stop a dog from digging holes?

Housebreaking Woes About Over?

No, this time I am not talking about my three year old daughter. I am talking about our one year old Sheltie/Beagle mix, Trixie.

Trixie is a cute little dog, very curious and great with our kids. She is kennel trained, but we've had a hard time with the actual housebreaking outside of the kennel. My living room area rug was a favorite spot of hers, much to my dismay.

We realized a couple things recently:

She is very excitable when she is with the kids so when we would take her out of her kennel, we'd put her outside before giving her access to the main living area. We thought that would be enough. It wasn't because she was still piddling a short time after she got her access.

So, we started taking her back out AGAIN about five minutes after we gave her rein of the living area. We figured maybe the excitement got her bladder moving. It helped quite a bit. Made a big difference, but not quite enough.

So what did we finally do? We rolled up my area rug and threw it in the garage a week ago. We took her "smell" of all her previous piddles out of the house (that no amount of cleaner would ever fully rid the carpet of). She's only had one accident since.

I have my fingers crossed this is it. The poor little girl needed her humans to figure it out.

Dogs & Arthritis

Our husky has arthritis through her legs and spine. The vet gave her about two years to live a year ago. He also told us to get her Synovi G3 Soft Chews. He sells it in his office but at about triple the price so he told us to get it online. It works really good.

With glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin, creatine, and antioxidants, it is packed full of what helps our husky get up and about. She hasn't fallen down the stairs since taking it. I am hoping we'll have longer than a year with her left. I get the "soft chew" kind and my dog eats them without putting up a fight. She thinks it's a treat.

If you like to buy in bulk, they also sell it in 240 count:

Wal-Mart Shying Away From Honest Review?

I wrote a post on my blog here about the problem we had with a Wal-Mart dog collar (our dog almost died). I also posted a review on Wal-Mart's web site (which they want consumers to do under their products). Apparently, my review wasn't what they were looking for (it wasn't a positive review) because they didn't post it. I thought maybe they just hadn't got to my review to approve it yet. However, they did post somebody else's review AFTER mine was posted so I know that is no longer true.

Doesn't Wal-Mart have the "you know whats" to post an honest review from one of their customers?

Hmm...I think I'll go ask them now and see if I get a response.

Dog Collar Warning from Wal-Mart

This morning I am lying in bed. My husband was already up but I was trying to sleep in (it was about 7:00 a.m...not really sleeping in by much, lol). He'd let our three dogs out into the fenced yard when he got out of bed. So I am laying there hoping to fall back to sleep when I hear the dogs crying and going at it. I thought our oldest (arthritic grouchy husky) was going after our middle dog (Roxi). I go running to the back door and see Roxi and our littlest one (Trixie) going at it (or so I think). They're best buddies! Roxi looks like she has Trixie's throat in her mouth and they're crying/growling and flipping all over the place. I go running out and yell at Roxi to let her go.

Then as I look closer, it looks like Roxi's mouth is actually STUCK on Trixie's neck. So, the kids and hubby are out on the deck yelling at Roxi to let Trixie go (they think they're fighting too), I yell up to him on the deck that I think Roxi's tooth is stuck in the collar. He comes running down and is struggling to get the collar off Trixie before it kills her. It's still a bit dark and it's hard to see. By that time, I am talking quietly to Roxi to quiet her down so she stops struggling and hubby is frantically searching for the clasp on Trixie's collar. By that point, Roxi trusts us to fix it (or is just plain petrified as she knows something is wrong with her little dog friend) so Roxi's curled up as still as can be but Trixie has stopped struggling and is no longer crying. She's passed out and her collar is still twisted and stuck in our other dog's tooth. All her oxygen is cut off and she's dying. It was horrible. DH can't get to the clasp the way the dogs are twisted but gets Roxi's tooth out of the collar and he lays Trixie back on the ground, where she lies without movement. Trixie is totally still on the ground. I'm thinking to myself, OMG she's gone and all of our kids are here watching. DH says she's going into shock so I take off for a blanket while DH is trying to get her to move, telling her to breathe, rubbing her chest, moving her a bit trying to revive her. Then I hear him yell, "She's up. Her tail is wagging."

Talk about being so scared and then relieved to hear those words and see her up and breathing. My daughter is crying. She just lost her horse and Trixie is her dog. If she'd lost another pet...OMG. This all happened so quickly.

We bring the dogs in and Trixie immediately runs to her spot and lays down looking a little scared. We offer treats and she takes treats and then eats her breakfast with tail wagging. What a near death experience for our little dog. DH also checked Roxi's mouth to make sure her mouth is ok (she's ok).

The collar Trixie was wearing was one of those nylon collars from Wal-mart called SimplyDog Blue Bones Collar (see pic below). It is brown and blue nylon, but not just the basic nylon. It has a design covering on it (brown with blue bones on it) and there was a small separation where the stitches had come loose between that cloth covering part and the nylon collar - big enough for Roxi's tooth to get caught while they played as they usually do and as the dogs twisted to get away, it got wrapped around her tooth tightening on it, tying the dogs together and choking the life out of the puppy...literally. That collar won't be going on her again.

Of all the things I worry about with the dogs - getting deathly ill, getting out of the fence and getting hit by a car, I never would have thought that something like a another dog's tooth getting stuck in a collar could happen and kill a dog the way it almost did Trixie. She was just a couple seconds away from dying.

It was horrid. I don't know if I'll forget the way Trixie looked on the ground after hubby got her loose. There was no movement from her...she was literally almost dead. Another couple of seconds of her oxygen being cut-off and we would have been having a dog funeral today and consoling heartbroken kids.

I will never buy a collar like this again. Cute is cute but dead is dead. We almost lost a beloved child's pet. All it took was enough room for a tooth to slip into the brown/bones fabric covering of the nylon collar to get them caught and we almost had a tragedy.

Please send this post to all dog owners that you know. Stumble/Digg, etc. the post. It's important. It's not something I would have ever worried about before but one of those rare things that can happen.
UPDATED 11/8/08: I left two reviews at Wal-Mart's site for this product so other consumers would be aware of this. They have not posted either review as of this date. Funny how other people's reviews are there, including one posted AFTER my initial review, but neither of mine are there. It's a shame Wal-Mart would hide something like this.

Happy Dogs

About a month ago, we had a fence put in so that our three dogs could run safely outside rather than tied up to a tree one at a time. Now they can play together and get more exercise. I got several quotes for fence installation first to get the best price and then got them to lower that (yes, I'm good). I wish we had done this sooner. When they are playing and we call their names, they actually look like they are smiling when they look at us!

Lost A Wonderful Horse

RIP Sweet Rex

My daughter's horse died the night before last. He was her best friend.

For me, yesterday was initially tears and then shock and disbelief that he was gone; it didn't fully sink in until around 2:30 a.m. last night or morning...whatever. I held it together for the kids yesterday, but today is a lot worse. It's harder to hold it together today. I don't know how a horse so full of personality and life could be gone just like that. My daughter had just rode him bareback for the first time two days before he passed away and he was making his silly faces at us afterward. I never knew a horse who made faces but Rex did. For my daughter, she still hasn't stopped crying for the past 24 hours. She holes herself up in her room and cries. I pull her out to eat but she goes right back into her room when she is done. I can't blame her...I'd curl up somewhere too if I could. She wants Rex back. I can't make this better for her. I can be there to hold her and talk to her when she cries but I can't make her grief any less. She has to go through her grieving process. We all do.

Rex gave her confidence. Rex pulled her out of herself when she was going thru some bad times earlier this year and became her best friend. He taught her a lot. Maybe that was why he was with us, though it was for far too short of a time. He should've had another decade with us. I will forever be grateful for what he did for her. I just wish we'd had longer to love him in life.

He wasn't just a pet to us. He is missed.

Pet Lovers Chat at Zootoo

I am an animal lover. We have three dogs, two horses, and a snake to show for it. We'd have cats too if I wasn't allergic.

I recently signed up at Zootoo which is a pet social networking site where other pet lovers can come to chat about what they have in common - their love of animals. It's a place to talk about your pets, pet products, and pet services and give your opinion of them (review and rate). You can use their people matching or Zootoo maps and find people or pet services local to you. The more you use the site, the more points you gain. These points get applied to the organizations of your choice (mine are dedicated towards my county's humane society and a local horse rescue that was on their list).

It's free to join! Register yourself and your pets. Upload pictures of them and find other pet lovers like yourself to not only socialize with, but learn from and offer advice to. Everybody keeps in touch via social networking sites now. With Zootoo, you can help animals at the same time.

Dog Gets Mauled and I Get Sick

Our dog, Sophie, is getting cranky in her old age. She has arthritis throughout her body so you can't really blame her. She is also hard of hearing now. It's sad.

Two days ago, she ripped into our one year old dog, Roxi, for either being near her food dish or trying to eat out of it (either will get her growling a warning to the dogs...not us). Roxi took one on the eye with Sophie's teeth. We thought it was just a scratch on the eyelid but it has started to get infected. I wanted to put neosporin on it but hubby said no. So I took her to the vet today instead. It is just a scratch and we have an ointment from the vet so she should be fine. It's a neo ointment. Gee, could've saved us a wad of cash if hubby had let me put neosporin on it huh?

Problem is...I am sick as a dog now. I am allergic to cats. I took our dog to a vet. A vet who sees cats. *sigh* I didn't think about it while I was there and sneezing constantly. I came home sneezing (and still am sneezing). I am a loud sneezer too (my kids actually yell to take cover before they run and hide when they hear a sneeze coming). I still didn't realize it until my husband put the vet and my sneezing and congestion together. I've never realized it in all these years (about 15 since I developed cat allergies) of taking our dogs to the vet, lol. Isn't that dense of me? (I know my sis will be VERY tempted to respond about just how dense I am but she can refrain:) Maybe I should've sent hubby with the dog to the vet since he was the one who didn't want me treating the scratch myself and saved myself all this misery...if I'd known.

So, my wallet is empty but the dog is fine. It's the human mom that is miserable now!

Grapes Kill Dogs

How many times has a grape or raisin fallen out of your hand or off your child's plate and your dog snatched it away for his own? How many have you offered one of these food items to our dog for a treat? Did you know that grapes/raisins are poison to dogs?

Grapes and raisins cause renal (kidney) failure in dogs. Whether it is a couple grapes/raisins or a pound of them, they can make your dog very ill. Some signs you might notice after the ingestion of one or more grapes/raisins are:

  • vomiting within a few hours of ingestion,

  • dog may stop eating,

  • diarrhea,

  • quiet and lethargic,

  • abdominal pain.

These signs can last for days or weeks. Timely veterinary care is necessary to help prevent fatality. In some cases, that isn't even enough and some dogs are still euthanized.

If you're wondering what other human food can harm your dog - chocolate, cocoa, onions, and macadamia nuts.

Jeffers Equine Takes Care of Your Horse

We have two horses that we love. They are a joy to be around and a great stress reliever when everyday stress starts to get to me. When I get stressed, all my husband has to say is, "go to the stable" and I am out the door to unwind. They give us so much and we want to make sure they are taken care of right so they remain happy and healthy horses. They deserve fantastic care. We do this by making sure they have good care, the right horse supplies, and a lot of loving scritches in their favorite scratch spots.

Jeffers Equine offers everything you need to take great care of your equine friends at a discount. Now I am off to shop for a breastplate to keep Rex's saddle from slipping.
