Lice is GOOD for you?

Most parents get the creepy-crawlies when they hear the dreaded "lice" word. If you've ever fought a battle against lice on your child's head, you know it's not an easy knock-out. The lice usually win for awhile before mom or dad are able to overcome them.

I saw a couple weeks ago online a study that said lice actually help us be creating a better immune system against allergies and asthma. Today, it's all over the internet. Speculation is that because of our current preoccupation of everything anti-bacterial, we may be creating over-active immune responses in ourselves and our children.

According to an article on Innovation Report:

"Their research, published in the open access journal BMC Biology, links the louse Polyplax serrata to a strong dampening of certain immune responses in wild wood mice. This implies that other mammals, such as modern humans, that develop in artificial environments may have less regulated, overactive immune systems precisely because they are not exposed to parasites throughout their lives.

The researchers speculate that the louse is able to exert some kind of immuno-suppressive effect, possibly directly by secreting some substance into the mice from its saliva, or indirectly by transmitting bacteria or other pathogens."

So mice that had lice had a less sensitive auto immune system. Could the increase in allergies and asthma be a result of our neverending quest for a sterile environment? I wonder if there is a relation between other auto-immune disorders, such as thyroid disease, as well.

Dallas Texas Hotels

I have family in Houston, Texas and Austin, Texas and have been to both. It's nice to have family to stay with on vacation. As a kid, we went to the beach outside Houston in Galveston, Texas then went to a rodeo when we were visiting family in Austin.

If we wanted to check out the Dallas city life, we'd have to look for Dallas Texas hotels to stay in since there's no family to mooch beds off of.

Texas was great but the red ants we had to navigate around and the poisonous snake in the pond spooking the horses were more than enough for me. I really loved visiting but some of the species that live there can do so without me residing there as well.

Almost Burned House Down - Twice!

We almost had two electrical fires in my daughter's bedroom this past year via the electrical outlets. It was supposed to have been fixed after the first time but then a different plug started shooting sparks. We shut down the circuit to her room so she's been without electrical plugs since this happened (she sure does miss her stereo). When the electrician was here today, he pulled the outlet out. We could see what had burned back in there. Scary!

We're going to have every outlet in the house pulled, the wiring checked and fixed as needed, and outlets replaced sometimes this week. It is something my husband and his dad could have done themselves but it probably wouldn't get done until later this year and it would take them days to do as opposed to several hours for a licensed electrician. I'd also feel better having the electrician take care of it. We are also having GFC outlets added to the bathrooms and kitchen. Our house doesn't have any of these and with the girls getting older, it's only a matter of time before the curling irons and blow dryers come out in the bathrooms. Better safe than sorry.

Electrical problems are nothing to mess around with. It's scary to think that we could've had a fire in the middle of the night in my daughter's bedroom. It almost happened twice!

What is Mesothelioma?

You've likely seen the commercials for it. If you're like me, did they tell you anymore than that it has to do with asbestos? Since then, I've looked it up.

Here is what it is:

  • Cancer caused by asbestos (knew that right?)
What you may not know is that the symptoms for pleural mesothelioma are:
  • Chest Pain
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Weight Loss
  • Like the flu, symptoms can also be cough, fever, weak and just not that hungry
  • May not have any symptoms.
  • Hoarse, swallowing not as easily as it usually is for you, and coughing up blood
  • Accumulation of fluid between lining of lung and chest cavity.
Symptoms for peritoneal mesothelioma include:
  • Abdomen pain/swelling
  • Bowel distention/obstruction
  • Anemia and more.
Go to Mesotheliomahelp.net for more information!

Blogger Is Looking For Your Opinion

Blogger wants your opinion on product ideas. If your blogs are with blogger, take a few minutes to give them your feedback today. I use blogger for all of my blogs but I've sometimes wondered if it was the right choice because Wordpress has so many features blogger doesn't (not to mention fantastic templates). It looks like blogger is looking to fix that! I left my opinion (it's a simple click to vote for a certain idea) and it said there were four days left to give it...so go do it! You can also submit your own ideas as well if you don't see yours already shown.

I Have Sweet Kids

My two oldest (12 and 9 years old) wanted to buy something for their sister for her 8th birthday with their own money (they all have savings accounts for tooth fairy money, birthday money, etc.). She LOVES to sing so they came up with the idea of getting her an iPod. They were looking at the Apple iPod Shuffle in Pink but when they saw the Creative Zen Mozaic 4 GB MP3 Player, they wanted that for her instead since it has so many more features over the iPod Shuffle. Even with the price difference between the two (the shuffle is much less), they still went with the Zen.

Aren't they sweet?

Edited to Add: My 9yo son came home with a necklace kit to give to his little sister for her birthday today too. He earns "bucks" at tutoring that he can "shop" with for toys that they supply there for the kids to shop with. He used some of his tutoring bucks to buy his little sister another birthday present! She's all girly so she is going to love making her own little necklace. My kids amaze me sometimes. I'm so proud of them. Of course, he also came home with some goo in a container that farts when you sqoosh it. I guess he had to make sure he had something totally "boy" too for himself, lol.

They really thought of things that they knew my 8yo would love from singing (the mp3 player) to the necklace (girly). Very thoughtful of them.

Shopping for Mother's Day

I've been looking for some good sales for Mother's Day. I can usually find great sales on items online so I am looking for great prices on what my husband is buying me for Mother's Day. Usually, he surprises me, and he always does a fantastic job, but this year I know what I am getting (because I asked for it). Do you know what you're getting for Mother's Day?

Underwire bra is torture but possibly saves a life

A lucky woman wearing an underwire bra in Detroit might be alive due to these uncomfortable contraptions. It seems the underwire deflected a bullet...never penetrated the skin. What a lucky woman!

I didn't think underwire was good for much of anything except torture personally but for this 57-year-old woman in Detroit, I'll bet she's thanking her lucky stars she had it on. If she'd had my hang-up about underwire, she might not be alive.

Scrapbooking

Does anybody know what the best way is to learn how to do this? I see the kits at stores but I don't know if buying a kit is the best way to start or if I should take a class first. I want to make a scrapbook for each of my kids to fill over the coming years and give to them when they are adults.

I think it'd be a great keepsake for them and it looks like a lot of fun - the pictures, designs, rubber stamps - there is just so much you can do with a little creativity. I'd like to make each one individual to each of my four children.

I just don't know where to start. I get intimidated with learning something new and I tend to back off of it rather than go for it. I'd really like to go for this. Of course, I'd also like to learn to sew too and that hasn't happened yet.

You are a racist if you exercise your rights

...according to Janeane Garofalo that is.

Anybody who doesn't have the same opinion as Janeane Garofalo and chooses to exercise their rights are racists and red-necks? Give me a break. I don't agree with the huge debt that is being put on my children and future grandchildren by Obama and his Administration with all the bailouts and pork. I wasn't at any of the demonstrations but if there had been one locally, I might have been as is my right. I don't think that makes me a racist or a red-neck. I have free speech/expression and the freedom to peacefully assemble. I guess this actress has the same right to spew the hate she did and insult anybody who doesn't agree with Obama's moves so far but she just made herself look like a radical idiot in my personal opinion.

If You Were an Apple, You'd Be Delicious

...that's what my three-year-old said to me today after hearing a girl in "17 Again" (movie with Zac Efron) say it today at the movie theatre. I would imagine I'll hear it a few more times as more kids go and see this movie, lol. It was a cute movie. I can see why a lot of girls like Zac Efron. He's a cute kid. I guess he's not technically a kid. He is 22 years old. My kids liked the movie. We ate too much double buttered popcorn, pepsi, nachos, and junior mints. What a combo! Oy, my poor stomach.

After a week of eating too much and too often, this trip to the movies and all the unhealthy food I put into my system today was just a drop in the bucket. My weight scale tells me it is time to do something. The scale screams, "You're hurting me. Get off!" every time I step on it now. If I don't start doing something about myself, I am going to have to make friends with 200 if I keep this up! Boy do I need the best diet pills on the market about now!

Quick Post During Spring Break

I don't have a lot of time...my stepkids are here, hubby is home from work, the house is a mess, and we have places to go today. What a busy week it has been.

First, I hope everybody had a great Easter!!

My mother-in-law and father-in-law were here through Easter. They left yesterday morning. We always eat too much when they are in town or we are at their place. This visit was no exception. I fell into bed every night SO tired. It must be from all the food!! My father-in-law can't sit and do nothing so while he was here, he and my husband put a new garage door up, a new stair rail, and two new outdoor lights by the front door (wind storm took out one of our other ones). Next project on my "honey do" list is our family room.

My stepkids have been here since Saturday. My stepson is a tornado of energy so it's always a bit frenetic when he is here.

Just wanted to drop a quick HI. I have to run again. What a busy week! My house is such a mess between the six kids and three dogs...wow!

I keep track of my reading at Shelfari. I like to read a lot so it helps me keep track of what I've read and what I have left to read (like in a series). A few of them are my husband's (the bike riding) or my toddler's (the potty books, lol). Here's my bookshelf:

Bad Mommy

I totally forgot about my two oldest kids' environmental meeting this morning at the park to clean it up! How could I forget? My husband and I worked outside all morning to seed a large area of lawn where the dogs wore it down to mud, totally forgetting two of my kids had to be somewhere at 10:00 a.m. (and they forgot too). They're on spring break so it just slipped my mind that they had a school activity this morning.

I can't believe I forgot! It's even on my calendar. Bad mom!

Protecing Our Children

With all the highly publicized child kidnappings (Cayley, Hayleigh, and now the latest is little Sandra in California), it is scary to let your child out of your sight anymore. What is wrong with people?

When I was a child, we could get on our bikes and as long as we checked in every so often, we were good to be gone pretty much all day long. I know crime still happened way back when but it certainly doesn't seem like it happened as often or was so widespread. Nowadays, I wouldn't let my child ride around the block, let alone take off for hours at a time like I used to. Am I supposed to look into self defense products for my children now, like I would for myself, if they want to go outside?

We teach our kids about 'stranger danger' but it doesn't seem like it's enough. We can't arm our children but I can't let them run loose around the neighborhood either so they stay home in our yard. It's a good thing we have a large backyard for them.

How do we keep our children safe without suffocating them? That's a predicament.

Jehovah's Witnesses are Back

With the nicer weather comes the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking at the door. They were out walking our street yesterday knocking on all the neighbor's doors, including ours,

I have nothing against other religions. I think it is a personal choice and that everybody has the right to choose the religion/faith they choose to. However, I don't think it gives other religions the right to knock at my door every month to talk about their religion, hand out things, or try to invite themselves for dinner in the hopes of gaining new members for their church! When they catch my children outside playing and talk to them to go get mommy/daddy, that REALLY pisses me off. They're STRANGERS. They have no business going near my kids!

Maybe if I post this on my door, they'll stay away:
