Cancer Sucks!

A high school friend passed away yesterday from cancer.  She was a year younger than me and never had a bad word to say about anybody.  She was one of those people who was always sweet, always helpful.  We sat together in our business classes and became friends.  After graduation we lost touch, which so often happens, and then facebook put us back in touch again recently. She ended up marrying another friend from high school.  I feel really bad for him right now.

I'm sure this is not how it really is but from an emotional standpoint, is seems like the good people are taken too early.  People with pure hearts leave too soon.

Very sad.

Cancer sucks!

What is Mesothelioma?

You've likely seen the commercials for it. If you're like me, did they tell you anymore than that it has to do with asbestos? Since then, I've looked it up.

Here is what it is:

  • Cancer caused by asbestos (knew that right?)
What you may not know is that the symptoms for pleural mesothelioma are:
  • Chest Pain
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Weight Loss
  • Like the flu, symptoms can also be cough, fever, weak and just not that hungry
  • May not have any symptoms.
  • Hoarse, swallowing not as easily as it usually is for you, and coughing up blood
  • Accumulation of fluid between lining of lung and chest cavity.
Symptoms for peritoneal mesothelioma include:
  • Abdomen pain/swelling
  • Bowel distention/obstruction
  • Anemia and more.

Cervical Cancer and Jade Goody

Jade Goody (Celebrity Big Brother star) has cervical cancer. It is the second most common cancer in women.

I have posted several times in the past about the Gardasil vaccination and adverse and sometimes fatal reactions to the vaccine. It is said that this vaccine will prevent some forms of HPV which can cause cervical cancer.

I don't trust this vaccine though. If you follow the link and then go from there, you will see why.

Cancer From Granite Countertops

If you have granite countertops, you might want to test them to see if they are the type that release harmful levels of radon. A radioactive gas, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer (smoking is the first leading cause of lung cancer).

You can buy a test for $20-$30 from hardware stores. If you have granite countertops in your home, go get a test. If tests show levels that exceed 4 picocuries per liter of air, you might have a concern.

Not all granite countertops emit Radon.

Boy, I am glad we couldn't afford granite when we remodeled our kitchen. I can now be perfectly happy with my laminate that looks like granite instead of wishing it had been real granite instead.

John Kanzius and his Kanzius Machine for Cancer

John Kanzius has non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He is also an American inventor (among other things - radio and TV engineer, ham radio operator, station owner). He has invented something that may treat cancer in the future using his radio frequency transmitter (being referred to as Kanzius Machine). He built it himself in his home.

The details are technical so I will give you a link here. In short, it is hoped to destroy cancer cells without damaging healthy cells. Preliminary research has been promising with a 100% success rate on rabbits causing them no harm in the process.

Some individuals with cancer of the blood have allowed samples of their blood be sent to a lab to see if this device works on their samples. Human trials aren't supposed to start for another 18 months.

It sounds promising.

Why am I hoping the pharmaceutical companies don't put a stop to it somehow? I don't know anything specifically about them but I don't trust them not to try to stop something that will help cure a disease that they make a lot of money off of. It's in trials on human blood by samples so hopefully there is nothing they can mess up at this point. I might be overly suspicious but pharmaceutical companies and government aren't big on my "trust" list right now. Call me cynical. Call me pessimistic.
