Live Chat on Your Web Site

I've noticed that a lot of blogs offer message boards or a live chat on their web sites. I am wondering if that would be something useful on one of my other blogs. Would it bring more traffic perhaps by forming personal relationships with people who regularly visit my blog? That blog sees a few thousand visitors a month but perhaps the bounce rate would be lower if there was more of a one-on-one with the readers.

Search Engine Optimization

I have been working on learning what search engine optimization is all about. I want my blogs to get a good amount of traffic. This one gets good traffic and my stepfamily blog gets a great amount of traffic. However, I need to work on getting traffic to some of my newer blogs still. I want to drive them up in the search engines when somebody searches for a particular word or topic so I am learning about seo services. I just want to keep my blogs interesting and useful.

Blogger Is Looking For Your Opinion

Blogger wants your opinion on product ideas. If your blogs are with blogger, take a few minutes to give them your feedback today. I use blogger for all of my blogs but I've sometimes wondered if it was the right choice because Wordpress has so many features blogger doesn't (not to mention fantastic templates). It looks like blogger is looking to fix that! I left my opinion (it's a simple click to vote for a certain idea) and it said there were four days left to give it...so go do it! You can also submit your own ideas as well if you don't see yours already shown.

Blog Changes

Ack! Looks like space problems persist for this template. I've seen the photobucket message all day today. I was thinking about changing this template anyway to be more in line with my other blogs so maybe later today or tomorrow, you'll see a new template/header to my blog here! So, please be patient and pretend that ugly blue and white photobucket graphic isn't snaking down my page right now.

If you want to see my other blogs:

Stepfamily Sanctuary
Cowgirl Up
Healthy Me
Celebrity Syn

I do have an adult blog but for obvious reasons, won't post that link here. If you want it, you'll have to contact me directly for the link.

Making Money Online

A lot of people do it. I make a bit with my blogging using a couple of my blogs but I'm wondering how people find ways to have web sites/blogs for full-time income or close to it. Is it possible or is it just for a select few? Is the market saturated already? Is AdSense the answer or something else? Niche blogging/marketing?

What's the answer? I wish I knew.

Income From Blogging

Blogging has been extra income for our family since I started doing it last summer. It pays for my horse, and when I did it more so than I do currently, it paid for two horses and lessons. It's a great way to make a little extra money.

I have several blogs, but only two that I use as part of our income. I've been kicking around topics for other blogs. There are the celebrity blogs, how-to blogs, or you might find an electronics blog. There are so many different areas that you can hit, but I think the key, for me, is to find something that I am very interested in. Otherwise, I can see blogs that don't hold my interest dying out before they barely get started because I get bored easily.

New Template

I've changed the template here. I get bored easily so it was time for the other one to go. I think I'd kept that one the longest - several months. This one looks a lot cleaner (unless I do something silly like jack it all up with a lot of stuff in the sidebar). It's the first time I've used one with a black background because a lot of people don't like those I guess. It was my only major decision of the day - black background or no black background (hey, gimme a break here...it was a snow day today).

Hope you like it. I think the candles are pretty! I love candles.

Do you know any bloggers that kick ass?

Maybe they've got incredible, original content. Or they're overflowing with creativity. Is it someone that helps you become a better blogger? Or a bloggy friend you know you can count on? Or maybe it's someone who simply inspires you to be a better person... or someone else who sends you to the floor, laughing your ass off.Whatever the reason may be, I'm sure you know at least a couple of bloggers that kick ass.

Well... why not tell 'em so?

Part of a Stepfamily?

A lot of you probably don't know this but I am a stepmother. I have been married to a non-custodial father for 12-1/2 years. I write about the trials and tribulations of stepfamily life on my blog, Stepfamily Sanctuary. I also include advice gleaned over 13 years of chaos, conflict (oh, the years of conflict with a difficult ex), and love which you can find on the middle right sidebar under "stepfamily help." If you are looking for a "what to do" and a "what not to do" check it out!

Give Up Medicine for Blogging?

I am not sure I could be like Arnold Kim, who gave up a career as a doctor to blog full-time. For eight years, he's dedicated a lot of time to his blog, Macrumors.com. His blog is all about facts, gossip and rumors about Apple which now boasts 4.4 million people and 40 million page views a month. A MONTH! Wow! The NY Times thought it fantastic enough to write about it.

I've seen rumors online that his blog is worth $85 million. I'd like a blog worth a few thousand.

He has another web site, Touch Arcade, for iPhone and iPod gamers. This one will be of interest to me as I recently won my choice of an iPhone or iPod which I am excited about.

He made six figures as a doctor. He makes six figures as a blogger. That's impressive and something most bloggers can only dream about.

I am not sure I could give up a career as a doctor, especially after years of schooling, to blog full-time. I have a hard time relating to that aspect. What this mommy blogger CAN relate to is one of his reasons for doing so - his daughter. It is my reason for leaving a successful career outside the home behind almost nine years ago.

So, I can hope one day to become more successful at blogging for a steady family income. Something that takes us out of this too small house for eight people and three dogs. Something that allows us to afford these high gas prices and to take our kids out more often than once in awhile. Something that allows those fun days of shopping with the kids rather than the nail biting ones as you see every dollar spent melting out of your budget.

Congrats Arnold Kim!

How Blogging Helps Advertisers

I really enjoy blogging. I like to know that I can contribute to the household finances and still be here for my kids by blogging for advertisers. Plus, I get to write which I love. It combines everything and just works for me. I'm not the only one! There are bloggers just like me who want to advertise for you!

If you are looking for a great place to advertise (your company, your blog, your service, your product, etc.) and need to advertise on a budget, Bloggers Review is what you are looking for. You can gain exposure for yourself and not break the bank by advertising on blogs. This will help your page rank as well as where you land in search engines when individuals perform a search for a product or service you have to offer. Plus, you aren't limited to a certain geographical location since the web is world wide!

You can easily create a campaign for a minimum of $50 USD. Instead of spending thousands on an advertising budget, you can spend a minimal amount and give yourself a web presence. Registration is free too so you have nothing to lose by registering and checking out http://www.bloggersreview.com/.

Blogger vs Wordpress

I use blogger for all of my blogs so they are all in one spot. When looking for templates for it, I found that Wordpress has a larger selection of very nice templates. I hope to see more blogger templates available because I would imagine switching all my blogs over to Wordpress would be a hassle. I also hope Blogger gets a "Categories" widget soon. I know there is a way to do it manually, but I developed a piercing headache reading the details of it the other day and had to leave it be.

While I'm on the topic of blogs, all of my blogs have their own domain but are hosted at blogger. I'm wondering if it would be better for me to host them on my own space and how much it'd cost. Anybody have any opinions on that?

These are the blogs I'd have to move:

How I Blog

People are asking me how I work from home. Instead of having several little posts everywhere, I thought I'd post it here once and just give them this link. Much more efficient eh?

Here is what I did:

  1. I went to Blogger and made myself a few blogs. They have design templates there you can use. Set up was pretty easy. There are other places to set up blogs (wordpress comes to mind) but I'm not familiar with any other ones so I'll only post about what I know. I have a few blogs. One is more stepfamily related. One is a mish mash of my life. My newest one is about Ohio. I also have an adult one but I won't post that link here, lol. Shhhhh, that's private. You can also set up blogs/hosting with a lot of different hosting sites instead of thru Blogger or a similar company. I haven't done this yet though I've thought about it and still might do it.

  2. I went to Godaddy and bought myself domains for my blogs. You don't HAVE to do this (or use Godaddy...there are many places to buy domain names from). However, some advertisers don't allow blogs with urls from certain places so this gets rid of that problem. You can keep your blog at blogger but have its own domain name. Easy peasy.

  3. I also have mine on a Feedburner so people can subscribe to them easily. Make an account and set up feeds for your blogs.

  4. Start blogging. Most places you register at won't approve a blog until it is at least 30 days old with a certain amount of posts or ranking. Some are 90 days. So, post in it regularly.

  5. Look up how to optimize your blog, get it noticed by the search engines.

  6. Register at certain places that will pay you to blog/post for them. This is where you will submit your blogs for approval and find opportunities for working from home.

So, that's a start. There is a great forum where you can get loads of help.

One final note not related to blogging - beware of work from home scams. There are so many people out there trying to scam you! Don't pay for information that is readily available on the Internet. If you have to pay a company to work for them, DON'T DO IT! Since when do you have to pay your employer for work? Isn't is supposed to be the other way around?
