The Buzz Today - 5/7/09

The Buzz for Thursday, May 7, 2009:

  • Today is the National Day of Prayer. There's a controversy about President Obama doing away with the tradition Former President George W. Bush made of the day with a service at the White House. About the only time you'll see me agreeing with President Obama thus far during his term will be on this issue. I don't believe the government and religion should mix. A private service for the President, should he feel the need or desire to do so, is appropriate in my opinion. Religion and faith are private, not federal.

  • Maybe not the best place to put this following information about the National Day of Prayer, but there's supposedly racy photos of Carrie Prejean (Miss California of the Perez Hilton controvery the last couple of weeks) floating around. Do I care? Not really. I guess she may lose her crown over it and if those are the rules then I guess if you are going to be a part of pageants who have this rule, then you should abide by the rules. Personally, I don't really care. I don't watch pageants.

Jehovah's Witnesses are Back

With the nicer weather comes the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking at the door. They were out walking our street yesterday knocking on all the neighbor's doors, including ours,

I have nothing against other religions. I think it is a personal choice and that everybody has the right to choose the religion/faith they choose to. However, I don't think it gives other religions the right to knock at my door every month to talk about their religion, hand out things, or try to invite themselves for dinner in the hopes of gaining new members for their church! When they catch my children outside playing and talk to them to go get mommy/daddy, that REALLY pisses me off. They're STRANGERS. They have no business going near my kids!

Maybe if I post this on my door, they'll stay away:

Religious Freedom

I am 100% in agreement that each individual has the right to practice whichever religion he or she chooses to. I have no business trying to change their beliefs and don't like it when somebody tries to change mine.

Religious solicitors at my door really irritate me. When they try to invite themselves into my home for dinner, that floors me (yes, it's been tried and they've failed). The latest is to use a child at the door. I've had two people, one of them a young child, show up on my doorstep. When a young child asks to read you verses from the bible, how do you say no to that? The adults who bring them know most people wouldn't! I don't think young children should be used like that.

My husband and I are raising our kids to choose their own belief system - whether they agree with ours or not. I had a certain religion pushed on me for years as a child and the only thing that accomplished was a lot of resentment (towards the parents and the religion). I want my kids to find what they feel in the soul is right for them; not what I want them to believe. That means they can be christian, pagan, or buddhist and I have no problem with any of them...or any other for that matter.

Faith is too personal to push it on anybody.
