Hair Dye Stained My Tub

My daughter has been asking for blue highlights for a long time. I've done fuschia before for her but never attempted blue. So I bought this product called Splat from Rite-Aid. You can use it with the included bleach (bleach first, then blue dye for intense color) or just blue dye for more subtle blue. I didn't use the bleach...I'm not bleaching an eleven year old's hair. So, I used the blue only on her hair (it washes out after six weeks supposedly). It was a messy process from start to finish. It stained whatever it touched so when some fell on the bathroom counter - blue stain. I used a Mr. Clean Eraser and got most of it off my counter. The shower was another story. Blue splashed everywhere in the water - up the walls and everything! I was rinsing and scrubbing with Soft Scrub and a Mr. Clean Eraser for what seemed like forever. The stains never fully lifted out in some areas. The bottom of the tub has a blue tinge to it. I was SO mad. My daughter was blue stained all down her back, legs, and feet. A lot of scrubbing and she got most of it off her skin where it was diluted with water when it stained (direct blue dye on her skin wouldn't come out which I expected and tried to cover all the bases by applying vaseline first but of course, I missed some spots).

We won't be buying this brand/product ever again. What a mess!! I'll go back to using the fuschia product (that isn't a Splat product) or black or something else. Never again blue from Splat.

ARE YOU STUPID. THATS WHY YOU VASELINE EVERYTHING. FIRST THE EARS THEN THE FRONT SCALP, THEN BEFORE YOUR DAUGHTER TAKES A SHOWER ALL THE GROUT AND THE FRONT PIECE OF THE TUB. ALL YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS LEAN HER OVER AND WASHED HER HAIR OUT FIRST. THEN ONCE THE COLOR STARTS FADING AND ITS ONLY A LIGHTER BLUE SHOULD SHE WASH THE REST OF HER BODY. ITS YOUR OWN FAULT, NOT COLOR SPLAT. I HAVE AN ENTIRELY WHITE BATHROOM AND I USED PURPLE, AND I HAD ABSOLUTLEY NO MESS AT ALL.

All caps and name calling right off the bat unprovoked - either young or just ignorant of social graces I guess.

I did vaseline her skin (read the post). Short of coating her body in it, I couldn't get all the spots where rinsing was going touch. My mother has been a hair dresser for 45 years, I know how to do this. Second, my shower is a one piece so there isn't grout around tiles that was stained so don't ASSume you know what you are talking about. That's not what I said. Washing her hair out is what turned the fiberglass of my tub blue...it wasn't the grout (where in my post did I say it was the grout?).

I stand by my post. I will not use blue Splat again. My opinion, my right to voice it, my blog.

I use Splat! all the time. Most semi-permanent, awkward colors stain. You just have to be careful and make sure to have a warm, wet washcloth ready at all times to clean up the mess ASAP before it stains.

Also, if you would have had your daughter rinse her hair in the sink (as you said you were trying to dye highlights and not her whole head) such as a kitchen sink, making sure to hold a towel around the base of her neck, she wouldn't have splashed dye anywhere.

How did the color come out since you didn't use the bleach? I'm thinking of doing all my hair this blue color and i bought the dye, but i don't really want to bleach all my hair first.

The blue color came out ok without using bleach on med to dark brown hair. It would probably have lasted longer had we used bleach.

Wow. I agree, Syn, the all caps and immediate name calling was uncalled for. I have Splat - well, *have* had it, in my cupboard for weeks. I've been wary of using it for the same reasons you posted. I've done my hair burgundy and black, and virtually every other color in the rainbow, and even the cheapo dyes have led to some staining on my bathroom's surfaces. *Regardless of preparation!* Thanks for the forewarning post. I'm going to have to really think this one through first. Hmmmm... it is spring - maybe I do it outside and wash it under the hose... Atleast it'll save my bathroom. :/

An outside hose would be VERY cold, lol. Last summer when our hot water tank went, we spent a couple days giving the kids a quick shower in their bathing suits under the hose until our tank came in. Boy was it cold! Then again, they say a shot of old water is good for the hair:)

I found that Soft Scrub with bleach works best for removing dye stains. I would work the Soft Scrub all over the stained areas and let it sit there for a few minutes and then wipe while rinsing with hot water.

I came home from work to a BLUE MESS from splat. My cousin and friend did their hair got it ALL over my bathroom walls, door, floors and some how in my living room hard wood floor. Brand new apt and walls and floors. I tried everything and I cannot get this blue mess off anything. I tried soft scrub, magic eraser ect and nothing work. I called the company right away for advise and they were RUDE to say the least and told me "anything" would work in cleaning it if i put a little effort into cleaning the mess. I will never buy that product and will never allow anyone to use hair dye in my house again lol. Good Luck to anyone who uses the product.

Before I start, 2 things. 1) To the anon: That was uncalled for. This is a product REVIEW. She is merely recounting her experience with the product and conveying her attitude towards it. Despite whether it's good or bad, she should be respected. And her experience helped ME prepare to use this product. So shut the hell up. 2) I have long dreads, so I have a lot of hair.

Okay, so I literally just left the washroom after using this product. My hair is now, very, very blue. And Syn, you're absolutely right, everything it touches turns blue. The more diluted it is, the easier it is to clean though (did you try nail polish remover? That did the trick for me). I read this before I used it, in regards to how badly it stains and was able to prepare enough that the washroom escaped unscathed. My advice would be slather on the vaseline and rinse, rinse rinse. It bleeds a lot, too. I dyed the of my head, but now I have a full head of blue! (That could also be because they absorb a crazy amount water). I`m a bit covered in blue, but I don`t mind, as long as the bathrooms okay.
Thanks for your review and sorry to hear it didn`t work out.

I'm 26 yrs old and a mother as well to 3 children. I've been using Splat for 5 years now. I haven't had many issues using the product called crimson obsession. I dye my hair every 5 months. If you use old towels or newspapers for the floors & countertops it leaves very little to no mess at all for you later. As for the tub issue, if you use a cup to rinse the dye from the tub surfaces as your washing the dye out its lessof a chance that your tub will turn the color of your hair. My tub does hair a light (very light) shade of pink. Only noticeable if you stare at it. But I've used products that r foam bleach. Leave on for 30 minutes then scrub & rinse. Takes 4 session of this to get rid of the color altogether. As for the dye on th skin part, just simply using Ajax dish soap on a face cloth does the trick. I'm no professional hair dresser, but I've dealt with this product for so long that I've learned the tricks of the trade to enjoy using this product with very little issues.

Ok I have an opinion about this. I'm 26 years old and a mother to 3 children. I've been using Splat products for the past 5 years. The color of my choice is Crimson Obsession. For anyone looking to use this product I advise you that not only is it a very pretty color, but its also HIGHLY concentrated. It stains everything. But with proper care, you can have little to no staining at all.

When I color my hair using Splat, I 1st take old towels & newspapers covering the floors & countertops. So this way there is very little to no staining at all. 2nd, I don't cover my hair line with anything. I use qtips to apply the dye to my hairline. From my widdow peak, down to sides of my face, then to ears. Which prevents dye from getting all over face. The only place the dye makes a mess on me is the back of my neck. But simply using Ajax dish soap with a facecloth will remove any Splat dye from skin.

The tub, well yes it's annoying & a big pain. But if u take a cup & rinse any dye that washes from hair landing on tub as u wash your hair u will be left with less of a problem to deal with later. For any dye that has stained the tub, use fabuloso & soft scrub foam bleach. Soak affected areas for 30 minutes & scrub after 3 or 4 times of doing this. (I scrubbed once a day 3o minutes each time for 4 days) and on the 4th day, all the dye was gone.

Needless to say, Splat dye is hard to handle but with proper care, & caution u can continue to use Splat products.
