Weather and Asthma

I am sitting at my laptop with my nebulizer, inhaling albuterol so I can breathe, while I type.  I'm so weird!

I think it's the weather causing my lung problems right now - going from cold to warm, snow to 60 degrees.  These last six weeks have been difficult for breathing problems.

Can't wait for spring!!

Cold & Flu Season Hard on Asthmatics Like Me

Has any household escaped the cold and flu season so far this year? It sure does seem to be starting early. I just had one cold a couple weeks ago and now I have another. The same for my youngest daughter (who gave them both to me by the way).

With asthma being prevalent in my family (my oldest and I both have it), I'm wondering what I can do to reduce the amount of cold and flu occurrences in the house. Each cold seems to hit me harder than normal because of my damaged lungs.

We live near a grain elevator and you would not believe the daily dust in our house! (Kind of scary thinking about how much we are inhaling into our lungs now that I think about it.) It's crazy dusty in our house. I was telling my husband today about a central vacuum, wondering if it would help with the overload of dust we get in our house. Might just help my asthmatic lungs too!

You'd think with all the scientific knowledge in this world, there would be a cure for asthma by now. Do you ever wonder if there IS a cure for some of these life-threatening diseases and the government and Big Pharma just aren't letting us know because illness is a big money-maker for Big Pharma? I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories but I really wonder in the medical field if there isn't a little somewhere.

CFC Inhalers for Asthma Being Phased Out

Parents, Adults or anybody that knows anybody with asthma or who uses inhalers for other respiratory problems:

If you use CFC (chlorofluorocarbons) inhalers to control or treat your asthma, you should be aware that they are being phased out for a new required standard by January 1, 2009. December 31, 2008 will be the last day you can get your CFC inhaler.

They are being replaced by, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, a "new safe and effective alternative propellant, hydroflouroalkane (HFA)"...let's all hope it's safe for those of us who depend on our inhalers to stay alive.

Why are they being phased out for a new HFA inhaler? CFCs destroy the earth's protective layer (ozone). CFCs have been removed from products since 1978 but were allowed still for some medical uses, like asthma inhalers.

The FDA's announcement is here.

Peanuts During Pregnancy May Cause Asthma

In a study of 4,000 women out of Utrecht University, mothers who ate peanuts everyday, as little as one peanut butter sandwich a day, while pregnant increased their baby's risk of developing asthma as a child. Recommendations are to eat nuts in moderation (they don't want you to stop eating ALL peanut products because the baby may miss out on other nutrients normally found in them).

I have asthma and it has almost been fatal for me before. It causes coughing, wheezing, and labored breathing that can kill you or your child with asthma. It is not something to mess around with. You want to make sure you do everything you can to prevent your child from developing asthma.

They are hoping for more studies to be done on this to confirm their findings for nuts. I would also ensure you are not smoking or around anybody else who is smoking is not around you while pregnant. Once your child is born, please do not allow anybody to smoke in the house where the baby is - nowhere in the house. It's something you can help prevent - asthma due to second hand smoke.

Amy Winehouse - big yip.

Apparently, it's not emphysema. It's only the early signs of what could lead to emphysema if she doesn't stop inhaling toxins. Since this 24 year old girl (Amy Winehouse) has been intent on destroying herself so far, I have little faith she'll stop. I have little patience for it...ok, I have no patience for it.

I do wish she'd stop going to whatever hairdresser she is using. It looks like a ball of yarn on top of her head.

< - - - Come on!! No, I don't like her. I never have. She's better known for her drug use than her music at this stage and that's a bit sad. What a waste. My grandfather died of emphysema. I have asthma and I am only alive right now because of the Advair inhaler the doctors gave me after the last bad asthma attack had me within an inch of meeting the reaper. Messing with your lungs is just plain stupid! Why anybody would knowingly damage their lungs with cigarettes and other drugs and destroy themselves, and those around them unlucky enough to breathe in second hand smoke (and the kids who have no choice when their parents smoke around them I feel sorry for), is beyond me. Maybe I have a different view because I was a kid who breathed second hand smoke as a child and now I am an adult who is still alive because of a medication that keeps my airways from closing up on me fatally.

Amy Winehouse gets the publicity because she is a celebrity. There are tons of "regular" people who don't get the attention but whose lives mean something to somebody somewhere too. I'd rather hear about something meaningful a regular person does as opposed to something stupid a celebrity does.
